Digital twins in manufacturing are virtual models of physical systems that use real-time data, simulation, Internet of Things (IoT) connected devices, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence to improve broad aspects of manufacturing.

As leading experts in these advanced technologies, CMU researchers are able to develop and apply digital twin technology to multiple aspects of manufacturing including the design of parts, products, systems, and supply chains; development, monitoring, and optimization of processes; production scheduling, routing, and asset operation; virtual systems commissioning; predictive equipment maintenance; security and legal compliance; and enhancing pathways for product disassembly, disposal, and recycling.
