Reappointment and promotion template

Faculty members being considered for reappointment or promotion will need to fill out the Faculty Reappointment and Promotion Template. You may download a blank one, or produce one from Digital Measures. By producing the Digital Measures version, the system will automatically fill in much of the document for you. Then, review the document, make any needed changes, and fill in any missing data or sections. See the directions below for producing a template from Digital Measures.

Producing the template from Digital Measures

  1. Log into Digital Measures with your Andrew ID and password.
  2. In the red, left navigation, click on "Run Custom Reports."
    (Note: If you are a proxy, select the faculty member by clicking on "click here." In the pop-up box that opens, click on "Individual." For the list that appears, check the box next o the appropriate faculty member's name. Scroll down (if needed) and click save. The pop-up window will close, and you my continue with the remaining steps.)
  3. In Step 1, select the report: "College of Engineering Promotion and Tenure Template." Click the button: Select Report.
  4. In Step 2, select the appropriate start and end dates. The start date should be the date you began employment with Carnegie Mellon. The end date should be the date you run the report. *Please note that data in Digital Measures may not go back to your employment year. In this case, you will need to add the appropriate data.
  5. In Step 3, select the file format: Microsoft Word. 
  6. In Step 4, select the page size: Letter.

Submitting the packet

Faculty should submit the entire promotion and reappointment packet as a single PDF to the department head's assistant to upload to Box.

Please follow the directions below for which items to include in the PDF and the appropriate order of those items. Please also review the guidelines and procedures for reference letters.

Tenure-track faculty

Please include the following documents, in the listed order, into a single PDF for submission.  

Reappointment to Assistant Professor or Interim Review:

  • Department letter(s)
  • Senior faculty signature sheet
  • Candidate's reappointment and promotion document
  • Student letters:
    • Table of contents:
      • Who was asked
      • Response table
      • Reason if not received
      • Total number of asked and not received included in packet
    • Sample of solicitation letter from department head
    • Letters from all current Ph.D. students and graduated Ph.D. students from the past 10 years
    • 6-8 letters from randomly selected students in the professor's classes
      • 10 students will be asked
      • Submit all letters received
    • Optional: 2 additional students suggested by the department head
  • Five (5) notable papers

 

Promotion to Associate Research Professor or promotion to Research Professor:

  • Department letter(s)
  • Senior faculty signature sheet
  • Candidate's reappointment and promotion document
  • List of external references (Indicate candidates' choices and department choices. Also indicate whether the letter is received or not, and if not, justify why.)
  • Example of departmental letter soliciting external letters
  • One-page bio of each external references (including picture)
  • External reference letters

    • Table of contents:

      • Reason if not received
