What is STEM? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and often refers to the need to introduce these fields to students—well before they get to college or even begin to think about their post-secondary and career choices. The engineering (or E) component of STEM education puts emphasis on the process and design of solutions, instead of the solutions themselves. This approach allows students to explore mathematics and science in a more personalized context while helping them to develop the critical thinking skills that can be applied to all facets of their work and academic lives. What is engineering?

Engineering solves problems for people and society, ranging from such handy innovations as displaying room temperature on your cell phone to devising ways to protect buildings against earthquakes to the enormous complexity involved in putting a man on the Moon. More generally, engineering is the profession in which knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. (ABET).
