Gregory Lowry has been named head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Lowry is an internationally recognized leader in environmental nanotechnology and has served as the department’s interim head since January 1, 2026. Currently a Hamerschlag University Professor in CEE, Lowry has served as a faculty member for more than 25 years. Lowry brings to the role a record of scholarly achievement, research leadership, a deep commitment to teaching and mentoring, and long-standing service to the department.

That service includes his time on the department’s executive committee as executive director of new initiatives. In that role, he led the Center for Engineering Resilience and Climate Adaptation (CERCA), which unites faculty and students across the university to develop resilient, equitable, and adaptive solutions for infrastructure, energy, transportation, and water systems facing a changing climate. He also developed new opportunities for the department to expand its educational offerings through online certificate programs

Beyond Carnegie Mellon, Lowry has shaped the field of environmental nanotechnology for more than two decades, leading multidisciplinary research initiatives supported by the U.S. Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency, and National Science Foundation. From 2008 to 2019, he served as deputy director of the $30 million NSF/EPA-funded Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology (CEINT), a research consortium spanning several partner universities. In 2020, he joined the editorial leadership of the American Chemical Society journal Environmental Science & Technology as an executive and associate editor.

Lowry is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors.

As head, Lowry will lead the department’s continued focus on engineering resilience to sustain a changing world.
