The College of Engineering will host various events in celebration of National Engineers Week.

Photo ops

Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to head over to one of our Engineers Week Instagram photo ops at Tech Spark, La Prima in Wean, or in the Scaife Hall lobby. Take a pic and tag us (@cmuengineering) with your public profile.


Friday, February 16

Google Solution Hackathon

Time: 11:00 a.m.
Location: Doherty Hall, 2210
Team up to solve one of the United Nations' Sustainability Goals. Participants will get exclusive access to talks by Google professionals, networking opportunities with Google engineers in all fields, and compete to win up to $200 in prizes. Winners will get full support from CMU’s Google Developers Student Club to submit their project to Google's official Solution Challenge (only available to participants backed by a GDSC chapter), where winners can receive up to $3000 and exclusive mentorship from Google professionals. The event begins on February 16th and runs through the 17th. Learn how to RSVP.

The Engineering Outreach Office will hold its annual outreach program for local fifth-graders. Students will work in teams to apply the engineering design process to improving communities with varying demographics, environments, and resources. Register

CIT Ball

The annual CIT Ball is a student social event sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers.

NSBE STEM Night

Time: 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Location: Scaife Hall
The National Society of Black Engineers invites middle and high school students to learn about the college Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math and enjoy activities, games, exhibits, refreshments, and souvenirs. Registration is required.

Silicon Valley Lego Fun

Location: INI Building
The Information Networking Institute will be celebrating Engineers Week with Lego fun! They invite students to collaboratively build Lego creations and sign the autograph poster as they display their works.

Beyond the Classroom: CEE Undergraduate Showcase

Time: 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Location: Porter Hall, 107E
Carnegie Mellon engineering students curious about the incredible possibilities in civil and environmental engineering are invited to hear from our talented seniors. They will share their experiences in research, internships, study abroad, and the Washington Semester. Registration is required.

Very Hard Hard Hat Hunt

Dates: February 19 - 23
Location: CMU Pittsburgh campus engineering buildings
The Engineering Student Council is scattering hundreds of tiny hard hats throughout campus engineering buildings (Doherty, Wean, Baker, Hammerschlag, Scott Hall, Scaife, Roberts, Porter, Ansys). Starting Monday, February 19th, engineering students have one week to find as many as they can.

On Friday, February 23rd, from 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. @ UC Wean Commons, show up and drop off everything you’ve collected! Special prizes will go to the TOP 50 winners, and the ultimate hard hat hunter will be crowned with a magnificent grand prize. Black History Month MLK Immersive VR Experience

Time: 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Location: Scaife Hall, First-floor lobby
Please join us for light refreshments, friendly conversation, and an opportunity to experience “MLK: Now is the Time,” an immersive mixed reality experience that explores key themes of Dr. King’s speech and highlights systemic inequities that persist in our society. This is a come-and-go event, but registration helps us plan for refreshments and VR headsets. Register

CMU Presents STEM Club

Time: 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Location: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Hazelwood
The Engineering Outreach office will host an after-school program for teens who like to solve problems and learn about how things work. The program consists of interactive and engaging presentations on engineering topics paired with hands-on activities.

Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Elementary School Outreach Visit

Engineering Outreach Office staff and engineering students will visit Sister Thea Bowman Catholic Academy in Wilkinsburg to meet with fourth and fifth graders for Engineers Week. The Engineering Outreach team hopes to spark students' interest in the field of engineering by talking to them about various engineering disciplines, sharing stories of their journeys in engineering, and engaging the students in a hands-on STEM activity. 

Faculty Insights Webinar with Edith Luhanga

Time: 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Location: Online
Edith Luhanga, assistant research professor at CMU-Africa, shares research on a theory-based behavior change system that considers people's personal and social-cultural contexts. Registration is required.

Study Abroad Discussion

Cortney Seltman from the Office of International Education will host a Zoom session for first-year students who want to learn more about study abroad opportunities. First-year students can use this link to join the Zoom session.

Scott Institute Student Seminar

Mechanical Engineering doctoral student Mary Anna LaSala will present her work on proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers for hydrogen production. Lunch will be provided. Registration is required.

Women in STEM Networking Lunch

Location: SMS Group Corporate Office

Silicon Valley CMU-SV Product Hackathon

Time: 11:30 - 3:00 p.m.
Location: Carnegie Mellon Innovations Lab
The CMU-SV Product Management Club, Entrepreneurship Club, and WiiiN (Women in Innovation) Club invite Silicon Valley students to participate in the product hackathon. Students will receive the problem statement and their team assignments the morning of the event and will have the afternoon to come up with a solution. The last part of the event will be team presentations/pitches to the judges: Sudha Ranganathan, Director of Product Marketing at LinkedIn, Brett Ryckman, CPO of Way2B1, and JD Velasquez, Product Lead at Google AI. The winning team gets a lunch out with the judges the following weekend.

Women in Engineering Mixer

Join us for the Women in Engineering Mixer on February 23rd, from 2:00 -3:00 p.m. in the Scaife Hall Lobby. This event is organized by Women in MechE (WoMEn), the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Women in Biomedical Engineering (Women in BME), and Women in Electrical and Computer Engineering (WinECE). The Society of Women Engineers will host Middle School Day. CMU faculty, staff, and students can sign up to volunteer.

Everyday Engineering

Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 p.m.
Location: Online
Everyday Engineering is a program for students in 6th-8th grade that demonstrates how engineering is all around us. Students will be asked to think about their environments with more curious eyes, see everyday items, and ask themselves:

  • What problem does this solve?
  • Who has the problem?
  • Why is it important to solve the problem?
  • How does engineering help to solve the problem?

Students will learn about the different engineering disciplines through recognizable examples, see online exhibits, and interact with CMU engineering students. Register
