In this lecture presented by the Scott Institute, Olivia Dippo will discuss her career path, from earning her undergraduate at Carnegie Mellon in the Materials Science & Engineering Department, through today as the co-founder and CEO of Limelight Steel.

Limelight Steel is an early stage, venture-backed company on a mission to decarbonize iron and steelmaking, which currently accounts for about 8% of global CO2 emissions due to a heavy reliance on fossil fuels. Limelight Steel has invented a revolutionary process technology that is fully electric, has near zero emissions, and significantly reduces energy use compared to other steelmaking technologies. Limelight’s key innovation is a laser furnace, designed to efficiently provide the industrial heat for the production of ore-based metallics for steelmaking, all without the use of fossil fuels, providing a sustainable solution for one of the hardest-to-abate industrial sectors.

Olivia is the co-founder and CEO of Limelight Steel, a startup working to reduce emissions from the steel industry. Her scientific background spans a range of materials engineering topics, including having worked in metal 3D printing since 2012, at Carnegie Mellon University (B.S.), the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and at the University of California San Diego (M.S. & Ph.D.). During her Ph.D., she developed a new method for discovering alloys optimized for 3D printing, invented new ceramics for extreme environments, and developed a first-of-a-kind model to control ceramic optical properties. Olivia is an Entrepreneurial Research Fellow at Activate, and was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2023.

Lunch will be provided.
