Assistant Teaching Faculty & Associate Director of Partnerships, Integrated Innovation Institute
At the Integrated Innovation Institute, Jason Smith teaches and mentors the next generation of integrated innovators in our MIIPS program. Smith is also III’s associate director of partnerships, responsible for recruiting world-class projects and partnerships for the Institute.
Prior to joining the Institute in 2017, Smith was a research faculty member in the Engineering Research Accelerator at CMU where he researched regenerative medicine, wound healing, and biosensors. Prior to joining CMU, he spent 10 years at two Pittsburgh-based medical device and biologics start-up companies, Cohera Medical and Carmell Therapeutics. At Carmell, he directed the company’s research and development, preclinical testing, pilot manufacturing, quality control, and intellectual property efforts. He was awarded multiple Phase 1 and Phase 2 SBIR grants, which funded the development of the company’s first product, leading to its successful first-in-man clinical trial. He also continues to have a small number of research projects in regenerative medicine with other colleagues from CMU.
