Application submission periods

Fall: October 1 - January 15

Spring: June 1 - August 31

*Note: The AI Engineering ESTP degree programs are only available for Fall admission, and the ESTP Applied Study program is only available for Spring admission.

Prospective ESTP students will typically have obtained an undergraduate degree in Engineering or a hard science, such as Chemistry, Physics, or Environmental Science. Exceptional students with non-engineering degrees or technical-related degrees, and/or appropriate technical work experience, will be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.

Undergraduate performance in technical courses, responses to essay questions, letters of recommendation, and prior internship or work experience are all carefully reviewed by the admissions committee.

A completed application will include the following:

  • Online application form (demographics, education & employment history, GPA, etc.) 
  • Selection of degree program
  • Selection of engineering concentration
  • Uploaded unofficial transcript (official transcripts are required upon admission)
  • Official TOEFL, IELTS, DuoLingo English Test scores for non-native English speakers*
  • Uploaded resume/CV
  • Three letters of recommendation**
  • Four required essay questions pertaining to your interest in energy, goals at CMU, and expected trajectory after completing your degree. 

*TOEFL test scores must be received directly from the testing center. CMU's code is 2074.

Applicants who are non-native English speakers can receive a waiver of the English language requirement if they have completed a four-year undergraduate program at a university within the United States or a native English-speaking country before the start of the first term for which they are enrolled.

Minimum score requirements for TOEFL: Reading = 22; Listening = 22; Speaking = 20; Writing = 22; Total iBT score range = 86

Minimum sub-score recommendations for IELTS: Reading = 6.5 ; Listening = 6.5 ; Speaking = 6; Writing = 6; Band Score = 6.5      

Minimum sub-score recommendations for DET: Literacy=105; Comprehension=115; Production=70; Conversation=95; Total DET score = 105

**Recommenders will be provided with a link to answer questions and upload a letter to your online application.

 

Application review process

The application review process begins shortly after the application deadline. All applications must be submitted through our online application system by the deadline. Supplemental materials, such as official test scores and letters of recommendation, can be received after the application deadline. The admissions committee evaluates all aspects of a completed application when considering each candidate.

ESTP faculty and staff cannot comment on an applicant's chances of admission. For this reason, we kindly request that you refrain from contacting faculty directly regarding your admission status.
