Deep Learning Enabled Additive Manufacturing of Ultra-stiff and Ultra-light Plate-lattice Materials

This project aims to achieve plate lattice structures with high structural strength and high energy absorption during ballistic impact via AI-assisted design process and simulations, as well as additive manufacturing (AM). Development of materials with high strength to weight ratio is of high importance for the army, as its legacy infrastructure is being repaired and/or replaced. Such materials can reduce the weight of gear carried by soldiers and enable vehicles, allowing them to move with greater agility. Recent advances in deep learning and additive manufacturing provide us with an unprecedented opportunity to realize such materials without the need for expensive experimentation.
