The NextManufacturing Center offers introductory and part-specific course sessions for practicing industry professionals with technical backgrounds. These specialized courses require additional safety, including a legal agreement for participation.

Introduction to the Arcam S12 Electron Beam Metal Process and Equipment

An introductory review of the electron beam metal process and the Arcam S12 equipment will be provided. The basic principles of materials selection, powder spreading and process control will be discussed. The course includes eight hours of on-site instruction as well as the production of three standard parts using a design chosen by CMU.

During this session, participants will be instructed on how to set up a build, use Magics software, load the design file into the machine, set the machine parameters, set up the build chamber and start the build. Participants will also be instructed on how to extract the part from the machine and perform all post processing. Each participant will be given one part to take at the end of the session.

Cost:

  • $4000 per participant, three participants required. Participants need not be from the same company.
  • $1000 discount for all NextManufacturing Center Consortium members. The discount applies to each individual participant from a member company.

Producing Parts Using the Arcam S12 Electron Beam Metal Process and Equipment

An understanding of the Arcam electron beam melting (EBM) metal process sufficient to allow the submission of a buildable part design to CMU is assumed. The participant-specified part design must be submitted in advance for review. Checking of the provided part design for its ability to be built will be done by CMU in preparation for the on-site sessions. The course includes 8 hours of on-site instruction scheduled as 4 hours on each of two consecutive days as well as the production of one participant-specified part using the participant-specified design.

On day one, participants will be instructed on how to setup a build, use Magics software, load the design file into the machine, set the machine parameters, set up the build chamber and start the build. The build will run overnight. One day two, the participant will be instructed on how to extract the part from the machine and perform all post processing. The participant will be given the part to take at the end of the session.

Cost:

  • $10,000 for an individual participant with an existing part design. $2500 per additional participant from the same company or program using the same part design. A maximum of three participants is allowed. Participation is controlled by the contracting company.
  • $2000 discount for all NextManufacturing Center Consortium members. The discount is off the total cost regardless of the number of participants.
