Built on the 178-acre Hazelwood Green site, Mill 19 once served as the location of the Pittsburgh region’s most productive steel mills. Today, it is the headquarter location for Carnegie Mellon University’s Manufacturing Futures Institute (MFI) and home to some of the most advanced manufacturing research being done in the U.S.

MFI and its affiliates, the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute and the Catalyst Connection workforce training center, occupy Building A of the 265,000 square-foot Mill 19 complex. Carnegie Mellon engineers and scientists have access to 60,000 square feet of space that includes an additive manufacturing laboratory, modern workshop, low bay and high bay project areas, flexible and collaborative workspaces, and conference and meeting facilities.

Conduct research at Mill 19

Hold an event at Mill 19

Request the use of space for meetings, conferences, or events at Mill 19 by completing the Mill 19 event space request form.

Mill 19 amenities      

  • Distributed power stations providing access to 110V-single phase, 208V-2 or 3-phase and 480V 3-phase
  • Compressed air is distributed through the building enabling project-specific connection to 190 psig regulated at point of use
  • Wireless internet access to “CMU Secure,” as well as “CMU Guest network”
  • Fork lift: 6,000 lbs. capacity
  • Scissor lift: 20 feet lift height
  • Toxic gas monitoring system available for project specific expansion and use
