SEM Training

June 5-13, 2024

10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. ET

These training sessions are required for all graduate students who plan on using the SEMs in the Materials Characterization Facility in their research. This training will cover the scanning electron microscope, secondary electron imaging, back‐scattered electron imaging and energy dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy. Please note that this is a training course intended for students doing research and not a class for credit.

SEM Training consists of four, 90-minute labs. The training cost is $100. (Students must provide an oracle number). Successful completion of a one-on-one session with MCF staff after the training is required for daytime access. (This will be billed separately.)

Lectures in REH 124 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

  • Lecture 1 – SEM Overview – Monday, June 3
  • Lecture 2 – SE and BSE Imaging – Wednesday, June 5
  • Lecture 3 – EDS/Analytical SEM – Monday, June 10

Lab 1 – Basic SEM Operation (Quanta 600)

  • Monday, June 3 -  2:00-4:00
  • Tuesday, June 4 - 10am-12pm, 12pm-2pm, 2pm-4pm (last if needed)

Lab 2 – SE/BSE Imaging (Mira3)

  • Wednesday June 5 - 2:00-4:00
  • Thursday, June 6 - 10am-12pm, 12pm-2pm, 2pm-4pm (last if needed)

Lab 3 – EDS (Quanta 600)

  • Monday, June 10 - 1pm-3pm, 3pm-5pm
  • Tuesday, June 11 - 1pm-3pm, 3pm-5pm (last if needed)

Lab 4 – User Sample (Does Not Give Instrument Access)

  • Wednesday, June 12 - 10am-12pm, 1pm-3pm, 3pm-5pm
  • Thursday, June 13 - 10am-12pm (if needed)
