Forward Model Based Indexing of EBSD data sets: recent progress towards improving indexing results

Dictionary indexing of EBSD patterns is significantly more robust than traditional Hough based approaches but is computationally expensive. Spherical harmonic indexing leverages the same forward model but uses an FFT based approach to achieve significant speed improvement. A novel GPU implementation indexes thousands of pattern per second on modest hardware, enabling application of forward model approaches to large datasets and by non-expert users. Theoretical background and application to example datasets is presented.

Presented by Dr. Will Lenthe, EDAX/TSL

Will Lenthe took an interest in electron microscopy as an undergraduate at Lehigh University before completing his PhD at UCSB in Tresa Pollock’s group. His graduate work included collection and quantitative analysis of multiple 3D EBSD datasets. As a postdoc in Marc De Graef’s group he developed a spherical approach to forward model based EBSD indexing. Will is currently one of the principal EBSD software developers for EDAX’s OIM Analysis package.
