Dual degree applicants

Applicants interested in pursuing both a full-time ETIM MS degree and an Engineering MS degree must apply to both the ETIM program and the engineering department of their choice. The deadline for dual degree-seeking applicants to apply for the ETIM program is January 31 (extended deadline). Please check with departments regarding application deadlines, as they may differ.

Qualified domestic students applying for a fall-starting dual degree program may qualify for a full tuition scholarship and stipend. Learn about the CMU RALES Fellows Program.

Aspirations & experience

Please write a concise essay for each of the following four questions. If you’re a dual degree applicant, you should address goals for both the ETIM program and the particular engineering program you’re interested in pursuing:

  1. Other than reputation, why are you interested in attending this graduate program, and what experiences have prepared you for this degree study?
  2. What are your goals after you complete your degree, and how will our graduate program help you achieve your immediate and longer-term future career objectives?
  3. The College of Engineering at CMU values excellence, innovation, being genuine, diversity, respect for others, integrity, trusting, and being trustworthy. Within the context of your experiences, how would you contribute to these values within our community?

Official transcripts

You must submit official transcripts from your undergraduate institution(s) and any prior graduate work you’ve done.

For a transcript to be official, it must be sent to the ETIM admissions office by the university where your studies were completed.

If you’re currently enrolled in a degree program that you will not have completed when you submit your application, please submit your current transcript. Then, upon completion of your work, submit a final transcript.

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your transcript to the admissions office. An unofficial transcript can be submitted in several ways:

  • Upload an electronic copy through the “Academic History” submission option on the online application
  • Email transcripts to: etim@andrew.cmu.edu
  • Mail transcripts to:
Carnegie Mellon University c/o Julie Mull
311 Hamerschlag Dr Wean Hall 5215
    Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3824
    United States

If you send unofficial transcripts with your application, we will review them. However, if you’re offered admission, you will need to produce official transcripts prior to enrollment.

GRE scores

For the ETIM program, you must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) administered by ETS. For your GRE score report to be official, it must be sent to the ETIM graduate admissions office by ETS.

The GRE codes for ETIM are:

  • 1699 (department)
  • 2074 (institution)

You may expedite your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your GRE scores to our admissions office. You can do this by:

  • Emailing scores to: etim@andrew.cmu.edu
  • Mailing scores to:
Carnegie Mellon University c/o Julie Mull
311 Hamerschlag Dr Wean Hall 5215
    Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3824
    United States

Letters of recommendation

You’re required to submit three letters of recommendation.

Typically, letters are written by professors or work supervisors. At least one of your three recommendations must be from your professional experience and one from a professor at the educational institution you last attended.

Letters of recommendation and recommendation letter forms are submitted through the ETIM online application. If you choose this method, you must apply to the ETIM program with the online application.

English proficiency (for international applicants)

Because of the accelerated nature of the ETIM program, it’s essential that students have a strong command of the English language.

Typically, international and United States permanent resident applicants must take an English language proficiency exam. This is required as a component in determining academic success in the program and to support visa applications for admitted students studying on an F1 visa.

If an applicant’s native language is English, an English language proficiency test is not required if you meet one of the following criteria below:

  • US Citizen
  • Permanent Resident
  • Citizenship in the United Kingdom or Canada
  • Obtained a 4 year undergraduate at an US institution
  • CMU student or alum

ETIM accepts a Duolingo overall score of 105 or higher.

For your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report to be official, it must be sent to the ETIM graduate admissions office by ETS.

The ETIM program requires a total minimum TOEFL score of 100.

These minimum scores indicate that an applicant has the fundamental building blocks needed for academic tasks and for continued language development once in the program.

Though the TOEFL test is preferred, the ETIM program will also accept official IELTS scores (International English Language Testing System).

The ETIM program requires these minimum IELTS scores:

  • Total = 7
  • Reading = 6
  • Listening = 6
  • Speaking = 6
  • Writing = 6

The TOEFL and IELTS codes for ETIM are:

  • 69 (department)
  • 2074 (institution)

You may expedite the processing of your application by submitting an unofficial copy of your TOEFL or IELTS scores to the admissions office.

An unofficial score report can be submitted by:

  • Uploading an electronic copy through the online application
  • Emailing a copy to: etim@andrew.cmu.edu
  • Mailing a copy to:
Carnegie Mellon University c/o Julie Mull
311 Hamerschlag Dr Wean Hall 5215
