Building upon the PennSTART initiative, this CMU and RIDC partnership supports the creation of a connected corridor between Pittsburgh and Westmoreland. We aim to create resilient, effective, and efficient sensor systems within smart corridors and industrial parks to proactively monitor mobilities and suggest alternative short-term / long-term traffic management solutions. Such sensor planning studies can potentially benefit 1.55 million residents across 182 municipalities, including six of the ten Allegheny municipalities with the highest mobility needs. The project first focuses on a rigorous analysis of various sensors’ performance and resilience, and strategies of placing / configuring them for given contexts. Concurrently, sensor-data-driven community management can transform jobs, pioneering a workforce development strategy, crafting incentives to train and employ a skilled workforce in maintaining and advancing these systems. This multifaceted approach promises not just substantial technological advancements but also economic growth, technological leadership, and equitable workforce development, emphasizing mobility equity and regional progress.
