Offshore renewable energy (ORE) including marine renewable energy (MRE) is a growth sector in the energy portfolio of Pennsylvania and the entire Northeast region in the United States. A recently formed Department of Energy Atlantic Marine Energy Center has been tasked to lead technological innovation on offshore renewable energy technologies that are in turn expected to power the blue economy. Siting and design of marine energy devices in the open water requires an integrated analysis tool to understand the individual and coupled effects of hydrodynamic loading, as well as structural and foundation dynamics. This model can be coupled into a simulation platform that allows analysts to predict the performance of coastal electric infrastructure systems and responses of local communities during and after hurricane events. The proposed project will integrate the research of two faculty members (Banerjee and Bocchini) and two graduate students and will generate publishable research in support of the development of a simulation platform to aid the ORE industry.
