Dissertation boot camp

May 22-24, 2017

9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. ET

Hunt Library, IDeATe A

Want to get a jump start on your dissertation?

This camp will run Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. and breakfast will be provided courtesy of the Graduate Student Assembly. This boot camp is open to all CMU Ph.D. students who are in or near the dissertation writing stage of their course of study.

This hands on boot camp will help you jump start your dissertation writing process. A major focus of the boot camp will be writing a one-page and a one-paragraph abstract of your proposal or dissertation that can be understood by an informed audience outside of your immediate field. These abstracts can go directly into your thesis proposal, your final dissertation, and your job application materials. The skills we learn in creating these abstracts will help you in writing effective introductions and abstracts for research papers, conference proposals, and grant proposals.

In addition to working on the abstracts, activities and presentations during the week will include:

  • Strategies for making complex writing intelligible
  • Tips for presenting your research at conferences
  • How to write a literature review/introduction
  • Advice on working with your advisor and committee
  • Advice on time management and motivation
  • One-on-one consultations with GCC tutors

Registration is free. This boot camp is limited to the first 40 students to sign up. In signing up for the boot camp, we ask that you commit to attending the hands-on abstract workshops each morning. The boot camp will be held in room IDeATe A.

Questions can be directed to gcc-cmu@andrew.cmu.edu
Registration deadline: May 19, 2017
