Simplifying the determination of wind loads for regular buildings

Currently ASCE 7 offers three methods for determining the wind loads on a structure. The simplest method still involves sufficient complexity as to make it time consuming to determine the wind loads and perform the structural analysis to determine the forces on the main wind force resisting system.

For buildings that are regular in plan with respect to their geometry and the distribution of stiffness, it should be possible to develop a very simple approach to the wind loads that would be easy to implement in the analysis, while still satisfying the minimum load requirements of the building code.

This project will evaluate several typical building types and heights for a simplified wind load distribution to attempt to determine if a simpler approach is valid and not overly conservative.
