Please join us for CMU Engineering’s virtual program, “Faculty Insights: A 20 Minute Briefing.” In this series, faculty will share insights into their research, its impact, and provide perspective for the future of the field. Following the presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to direct questions and comments to the speaker.
Exploiting Additive Manufacturing to Design Alloys with Unprecedented Properties Using Machine Learning Techniques
Assistant Professor S. Mohadeseh Taheri-Mousavi will talk about how the rapid emergence of additive manufacturing (3D printing) is transforming the production of metallic components for critical industrial applications, particularly in the aerospace, automotive, and biomedical sectors. We can now tailor the microstructure and composition of alloys at voxel-level resolution and fabricate complex geometries with micron-scale precision. Assistant Professor Taheri-Mousavi will show that we can exploit the rapid solidification occurring in additive manufacturing, driven by laser-metal interactions, to activate new nano- and micro-scale features, leading to unprecedented properties. As these designs are highly complex, the use of advanced machine learning techniques enables exploration of multi-dimensional design spaces and integration of diverse fields and data modalities. This AI framework will therefore collaborate with metallurgists to significantly accelerate the entire design cycle and reduce associated costs.
Please register by 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday, November 17. Zoom login details will be forwarded to you upon completion of your registration.
