The US Federal Communications Commission and Department of Transportation are faced with a number of difficult decisions about spectrum policy for "Intelligent Transportation Systems" (ITS) that could shape the future direction of connected vehicle technology and the applications that depend on it. There is strong disagreement on what to do. This talk will summarize some of the important open issues, describe relevant research results from CMU on efficient use of spectrum for ITS, and present a recently-unveiled proposal on how the federal government should get past the impasse.
Jon Peha is a Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, in the Department of Engineering & Public Policy and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. He has served at the Federal Communications Commission as Chief Technologist, in the White House as Assistant Director of OSTP, in industry as CTO, and in Congress. His research addresses technical and policy issues of information and communications technologies. He is an IEEE Fellow and an AAAS Fellow.
