The objective of this project is to develop anti-fouling amphiphilic zwitterionic copolymer membranes and membrane coatings that self-organize to form surfaces with ~1 nm chemical heterogeneities of hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. We also aim to better understand the influence of the size scale and chemical nature of chemical heterogeneities on biomacromolecular fouling. The student will develop skills using mass and optical tools for characterizing surface fouling. The student will also have the option of testing the membranes under environmental and biological conditions to evaluate their anti-fouling efficacy.
